FRA issues Southeast HSR DEIS

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) on Sept. 8 announced completion of the Tier II Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the 123-mile section of the Southeast High-Speed Rail Corridor linking Washington, D.C. to south of Richmond, Va.

The DEIS is a NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) requirement.

MTA cleans up with Keep it Clean initiative

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo revealed a new initiative to discourage subway littering. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will run a public awareness campaign for the Keep it Clean initiative.

"Littering is not only illegal but dangerous and directly causes hundreds of thousands of delays, inconveniencing millions of New Yorkers," Gov. Cuomo said. "This initiative will help stop littering-related delays at the source, improving reliability and helping the MTA deliver the subway service that New Yorkers deserve."

CSX began operations this week at the new Pittsburgh intermodal rail terminal, which the railroad calls the last key component of its National Gateway Initiative.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, along with 15 other elected officials from New York and New Jersey, met with President Donald Trump at the White House Sept. 7 to discuss the Gateway Project. Accounts of the meeting vary, but are somewhat positive.

Among the elected officials attending the meeting was Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), who told WCBS 880 reporter Mike Smeltz that while Trump did not absolutely commit to funding Gateway, the meeting, in his opinion, was "positive."

USDOT accepting TIGER applications for FY17

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) is accepting Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant applications through Oct. 16 for Fiscal Year 2017 awards.

USDOT has $500 million available for the discretionary grant program and will be awarded on a competitive basis for projects that will have a significant impact on the nation, a metropolitan area or a region. The FY 2017 Appropriations Act specifies that TIGER Discretionary Grants may not be less than $5 million and not greater than $25 million, except that for projects located in rural areas the minimum TIGER Discretionary Grant size is $1 million.
