Metra awards $21.6-million contract for Fox River bridge

Metra's Board of Directors has awarded a $21.6-million contract to replace the 136-year-old Fox River bridge to Illinois Constructors Corporation of Elburn.

The project will replace the existing single-track bridge with a double-track bridge built to modern standards. Metra received a $14-million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant for the $34 million project. Metra and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) will share the remaining cost, with $6 million from CP and $14 million from Metra.

TraPac, LLC, launched the use of a planning management system by Tideworks Technology Inc. at its Los Angeles container facility.

TraPac is utilizing the Tideworks Spinnaker Planning Management System to support the automation of its on-dock rail operations at the Port of Los Angeles. This is part of TraPac's larger project to automate rail operations at its Los Angeles container facility in order to effectively manage increasing rail volumes.

The company says its new Track Geometry System will allow customers to take control of their inspection processes through a simple, cost-effective platform designed for mass deployment on any vehicle. The system features modular hardware, wireless sensors and a modern software utility, all of which the company says will make it easier to perform inspections and automatically transmit reports to a back-office utility. The system utilizes inertial guidance technology, eliminating the need for bulky sensors inside the vehicles. The Track Geometry System is uses a wireless tablet to simply its interface.

Southwest LRT bids may all be rejected due to high cost

Metropolitan Council Chair Alene Tchourumoff is recommending that all four civil construction bids for the Southwest LRT project be rejected due to responsiveness and price.

The bids range between $796.5 million and $1.08 billion and were opened in August. They represent the bulk of the construction work involved in building the tracks, road, bridges, trails, tunnels, stations and other facilities needed for the light rail line.
