BNSF, WSDOT awarded W.W. Hay Award

The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) presented the 2017 Dr. William W. Hay Award for Excellence to BNSF and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) for the Improvements for Passenger Rail Service and Reliability on BNSF Railway in Washington State project.

BNSF worked with WSDOT on the line between Blaine, Wash., near the U.S. Canadian border and Vancouver, Wash., to bring improvements focused on enhancing passenger rail service and ensuring a consistent level of freight operations through the region.

CN, Metra to replace track on Rock Island Line

Canadian National (CN) and Metra workers are set to replace track this weekend on the Rock Island Line.

Crews will begin the replacement late Saturday evening, with busses available for riders between 35th Street and LaSalle Street stations. Rock Island trains may be delayed en route due to speed restrictions near the project Saturday evening and on Sunday morning, Sept. 17.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a $1.2-trillion omnibus package to provide all discretionary funding for the federal government for the 2018 fiscal year.

The bill, known as Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act (H.R.3354), is made up of 12 appropriations bills including the Transportation/Housing and Urban Development Appropriations (THUD) bill and passed the House by a vote of 211-198.

Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad recently began installing Railhead Corporation's new Locomotive Digital Video Recorder HD system.

The cameras being installed on the railroad's fleet include twin view forward-facing and rear-facing cameras and two inward-facing cameras. The installation coincides with the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) recommendation letter, which states that inward and outward facing audio and image recorders improve the quality of accident investigations and provide training tools to improve operator safety and compliance.

Tacoma, Wash.-based shortline Tacoma Rail has selected Herzog Technologies, Inc. (HTI) to provide Positive Train Control (PTC) Hosting services.

Herzog PTC Hosting "allows railroads nationwide to simplify and accelerate their PTC implementation utilizing Herzog's PTC expertise and existing PTC data center infrastructure," HTI said. "With this partnership, Herzog will assist Tacoma Rail in meeting the mandated [Dec. 31, 2018] PTC [federal implementation] deadline and be interoperable with Tacoma Rail's host railroads," BNSF and Union Pacific.

Metra awards $21.6-million contract for Fox River bridge

Metra's Board of Directors has awarded a $21.6-million contract to replace the 136-year-old Fox River bridge to Illinois Constructors Corporation of Elburn.

The project will replace the existing single-track bridge with a double-track bridge built to modern standards. Metra received a $14-million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant for the $34 million project. Metra and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) will share the remaining cost, with $6 million from CP and $14 million from Metra.
