Md. pols propose D.C. Metro restructure

Maryland Democrats are proposing a restructuring of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) that would also include dedicated funding for the transit operator.

The proposal, released June 19 by suburban representatives and reported in local media, would shrink the WMATA board from 16 to three members, namely, the secretaries of transportation of Maryland and Virginia, and Washington, D.C.'s transportation director.

Gov. Cuomo aims to give state majority control of MTA Board

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo advanced legislation that would give the state majority control of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), citing the transit agency's "state of crisis."

New York state has six seats on the MTA Board, New York City has four and Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Putnam compromise the balance of the board's 14 total voting seats with no voting majority.

Valley Metro joins educational partnership to help keep riders cool

Valley Metro Rail is partnering with The Refrigeration School, Inc., (RSI) to create a "first-of-its-kind" customized training program specifically designed around the niche HVAC equipment utilized on Valley Metro light-rail vehicles.

Valley Metro says that seven maintenance technicians have earned their HVAC certification by completing the five-week, 100-hour training course. The hands-on classes were conducted at the Valley Metro Rail Operations & Maintenance Center.
