Valley Metro joins educational partnership to help keep riders cool

Valley Metro Rail is partnering with The Refrigeration School, Inc., (RSI) to create a "first-of-its-kind" customized training program specifically designed around the niche HVAC equipment utilized on Valley Metro light-rail vehicles.

Valley Metro says that seven maintenance technicians have earned their HVAC certification by completing the five-week, 100-hour training course. The hands-on classes were conducted at the Valley Metro Rail Operations & Maintenance Center.

MTA reopens two rehabilitated Brooklyn stations, continues Capital Program improvements

After a months-long closure for rehabilitation, two 100-year-old subway stations on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) 3 line in Brooklyn reopened for service June 19.

MTA says the work performed on the Sutter Av-Rutland Rd and Junius St stations will "significantly improve the station environment and commuting experience for thousands of customers who use the two stops on the 3 Line."

In her new position, Arens is responsible for managing the firm's transportation operations in 16 states in the Central region of the U.S.

Since joining WSP USA in 1994, Arens has served as national project operations manager, as well as chief of staff and operations manager for the firm's Central region. She has managed WSP's national traffic engineering technical resource center and has served as a project manager and lead transportation engineer on various projects throughout the Midwest, including the I-75 Modernization Project now under way in Oakland County on behalf of the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Canada provides funds to advance planning of Yonge Subway extension

The planned extension of Toronto Transit Commission's Yonge Subway north to the York Region received a CA$36-million (US$27.18 million) infusion from the government of Canada to advance planning preliminary engineering.

The proposed 7.4-km (4.6-mile) extension would provide a "missing link" in Toronto's rapid transit network by connecting Finch Station to Highway 7. The extension would include five stations and will take approximately 10 years to complete.
