AAR, GoRail recognize Rep. DeFazio with Railroad Achievement Award

U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) was honored Aug. 14 with the Railroad Achievement Award by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and GoRail.

AAR says the award is given periodically to members of Congress who have shown leadership on policies that help ensure the vitality of railroads in the United States. The Railroad Achievement Award was launched in May 2017 with Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Bill Nelson (D-FL) jointly recognized as the inaugural award recipients.

The Gateway Program Development Corporation (GDC) is turning to the private sector to issue ideas on how to deliver the Hudson Tunnel Project.

GDC issued a Request for Information (RFI), "seeking innovative ideas from private sector leaders to help inform planning for the procurement and delivery, including potential design, construction and financing solutions, of the Hudson Tunnel Project and the final section of the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing."

LACMTA releases Draft EIR of Union Station improvements

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) has released its Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Los Angeles Union Station Forecourt and Esplanade Improvement Project.

The project is planned to enhance pedestrian and bicycle access to and from Los Angeles Union Station and reestablish the connection between the station and surrounding communities. The project will focus on perimeter improvements to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and connectivity. LACMTA says the Draft EIR analyzes all environmental areas, including aesthetics, land use, recreation, transportation and traffic, among others. Active Transportation Program grant funds that contain federal monies have been secured for the project.

Texas Central, Fluor reach HSR agreement

As reported in the June 2017 issue of Railway Age, Fluor Corp. announced that it has reached agreement with Texas Central Rail Holdings, LLC to advance the preliminary development of the proposed 240-mile high-speed passenger rail line connecting Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston.

The cost of the project has been estimated at $10 billion. Central Japan Railway earlier said it would provide its Shinkansen bullet train technology for a schedule of 60 trains daily traveling at 205 mph.
