California high-speed project meets ARRA funding deadline

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) says it has met federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 requirements by fully investing the more than $2.55 billion granted to the state since 2009 to build the nation's first high-speed rail system.

CHSRA explains that these funds have helped to create thousands of new jobs and generated approximately $4 billion in economic activity in the Central Valley and across California.

London Trackwork awarded supply contract for Edmonton Valley Line

London Trackwork Inc. has been awarded the supply contract for the Valley Line LRT project in Edmonton, Alberta.

The company will embed 42,720 linear meters of rail using Icosit rail grout. According to London Trackwork's website, the rail grout is "designed as load-bearing, flexible leveling grout for elastic fixing of grooved rail (girder rail) or T-rails on concrete slabs, steel bridge decks and in tunnels."

KC Streetcar Authority (KCSA) made plans to move forward with the next phase of technical work for the Streetcar Riverfront Extension and Multi-Modal project.

BNSF completes Washougal River Railroad Bridge replacement

BNSF Railway has completed the replacement of the Washougal River Railroad Bridge near Camas, Wash., using innovative techniques that preserved delicate wildlife in the area.

The Washougal River Railroad Bridge was originally built in 1908 and consisted of two 200-foot through truss spans with 50-foot deck plate girder approach spans. The bridge spans the Washougal River on BNSF's Fallbridge Subdivision in southwest Washington. Approximately 15 miles east of Portland, Ore., the railroad says the bridge supports a significant amount of traffic in and out of BNSF's yard at Vancouver, Wash.

The pilot project consisted of a test of the use of a "curtain grouting" technique to add a waterproof membrane to the exterior of the tunnel walls using a proprietary polymer-based material.

Sound Transit approves budget for West Seattle and Ballard Link extensions

The Sound Transit Board approved the West Seattle and Ballard Link Extensions, establishing a $285.9-million budget for the project's preliminary engineering.

Additionally, the Sound Transit Board also approved a $24.4-million consultant contract with HNTB Corporation to begin project development services.
