STEPS terminal to locate on KCS main line in Texas

Rangeland Energy is developing a South Texas Energy Products System (STEPS) terminal in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Kansas City Southern's main line, the Class I announced last week on its website.

The terminal is expected to begin service in first-quarter 2017 for initial manifest shipments.

NTSB, FRA launch investigations into Amtrak derailment

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will examine multiple factors that may have played a role in yesterday's Amtrak train derailment near Chester, Pa., that killed two people.

The accident occurred when the train hit a backhoe on the track. Two maintenance workers who were on the track or the backhoe — both Amtrak employees — were killed. About 35 people were injured, according to news media reports.

NS annual report cites cost savings under strategic plan

Norfolk Southern Corp. yesterday unveiled its annual report online, noting "early accomplishments" of the Class I's recently announced five-year strategic plan to drive growth, streamline operations and improve profit.

In his first annual report letter to shareholders since he became chief executive officer in 2015, President and CEO James Squires wrote that the railroad "has taken decisive and deliberate action to capitalize on significant growth opportunities within our unique network."

BNSF 'disappointed' in court ruling against intermodal project near Port of L.A.

A California superior court judge's ruling this week has halted BNSF Railway Co.'s $500 million intermodal project near the Port of Los Angeles.

The ruling involved several lawsuits filed against a plan to build a 153-acre intermodal rail facility known as the Southern California International Gateway. The lawsuits were filed over concerns that the project would have a harmful effect on nearby neighborhoods and the environment.

Watco to build new liquid fuels terminal in Mexico

Watco Cos. LLC has reached an agreement with WTC Industrial to design, build and operate a new, public unit-train liquid fuels terminal and general cargo facility at WTC Industrial Park in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

The terminal will be located on Kansas City Southern de Mexico's (KCSM) main line and will have the capacity to unload one unit train per day in Phase I, company and WTC Industrial officials announced yesterday in a press release.

Amtrak debuts $50 million renovation plan for D.C.'s Union Station

Amtrak has unveiled a $50 million plan to renovate and expand the intercity and commuter-rail concourse at Union Station in Washington, D.C.

The project would add approximately 20,000 square feet of passenger space, nearly doubling the concourse's current capacity, Amtrak officials announced Tuesday in a press release.

Amtrak Cascades station construction to start in June

Construction will kick off in June on a new Amtrak station in Tacoma, Wash., the Washington State Department of Transportation's (WSDOT) Rail Division announced late last week.

The station will be built in Tacoma's Freighthouse Square and located along the Amtrak Cascades route.

CP files proxy for shareholder resolution at NS' annual meeting

Canadian Pacific yesterday filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission a shareholder resolution that will ask Norfolk Southern Corp.'s board to engage in "good faith discussions" regarding CP's proposed merger with NS.

CP also filed a letter that will be sent to NS shareholders in which the Canadian Class I describes what it believes would be the merger's value to shareholders.

Amazon to build giant fulfillment center next to BNSF intermodal site

Amazon.com Inc. has plans to build a 800,000-square-foot fulfillment center adjacent to BNSF Railway Co.'s Logistics Park Kansas City intermodal facility in Edgerton, Kan., the online retailer and state officials announced last week.

The fulfillment center, which is expected to employ 1,000 full-time workers, will pick, pack and ship large retail items to customers, according to a press release issued by Amazon.com.

Norfolk Southern Corp. will hold its annual meeting May 12, the Class I announced today in a notice filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and in a letter addressed to NS employees.

At the meeting, NS shareholders will get the opportunity to vote whether they want the company to engage in merger discussions with rival Canadian Pacific.

Hudson River rail tunnel project receives funding commitment

Amtrak's Gateway program, which includes rebuilding the Hudson River rail tunnel system, received commitments last week for the funding of preliminary engineering work and the creation of an executive oversight committee.

The project to build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River will receive $70 million in funding for critical preliminary engineering work, with $35 million in federal funding coming from Amtrak and $35 million from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), according to a PANYNJ press release.

NS board names Miles to audit committee

Norfolk Southern Corp.'s board has elected Amy Miles to serve as chairwoman of the board's audit committee, effective at the corporation's 2016 annual meeting.

Miles will succeed Karen Horn, who is retiring from the board. She has served as an NS director since 2014 and will continue to serve as a member of the board’s finance and risk management committee, according to an NS press release.

CN rolls out 2016 plan for safety innovation

UP to speed up trains on rail line in Las Vegas area

Starting today, Union Pacific Railroad will increase train speed on 7.5 miles of rail line in Clark County, Nev., following recent track upgrades in the Las Vegas area, the Class I announced late last week.

Track improvements that meet or exceed Federal Railroad Administration standards will enable UP to speed up trains from 40 mph to 60 mph on rail line between Bonanza Road and Maule Avenue, UP officials said in a press release.

NS to expand Norfolk HQ as part of office consolidation

Norfolk Southern Corp. will spend $8.2 million to expand its corporate headquarters in Norfolk, Va., as part of a plan to consolidate its corporate offices in Norfolk and Atlanta and close its Roanoke, Va., office building, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced late last week.

With the expansion of the NS headquarters, the Class I will add 165 employees to the Norfolk facility, according to a press release issued by McAuliffe's office.

TSB: Poor track conditions, maintenance delays led to CN derailment

Poor track conditions and maintenance delays led to the May 2014 derailment of a CN train near Fort Frances, Ont., the Transportation Safety Board of Canada announced earlier this week.

The train was traveling from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Chicago along the Fort Frances Subdivision when it derailed May 23, 2014, according to a TSB press release and the TSB report.
