The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission has approved a $10,000 grant to make rail safety upgrades near a railroad crossing and track in King County, Wash.The grant was provided through the Grade Crossing Protective Fund at the request of the city of Auburn, Wash. BNSF Railway Co. owns the tracks involved in the project.The city requested $10,306 to extend safety fencing along the city's right-of-way at B Street NW to the West Main Street crossing in Auburn. Additional fencing will also be installed on the city's right-of-way on both sides of the railroad tracks at 2nd Street NW, just north of the West Main Street crossing. The track area involved has a history of four pedestrian and train incidents since 2007, including three fatalities, according to a commission press release.The fencing will be used to prevent pedestrians from walking on the track and direct them to the West Main Street crossing, which is equipped with active railroad warning devices. Kansas City Southern (KCS) will spend $14.3 million this year on construction and improvement projects on its New Orleans subdivision.
The Class I has scheduled rail, crosstie and crossing improvements between Port Allen and Simmesport, La., and a rail project in Norco, La. The work will begin Nov. 15 and extend through late December, according to a KCS press release.

Canadian Pacific officials yesterday expressed disappointment with Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) Chair Kathy Fox's comments on the topic of fatigue in the rail industry, which the board addressed with its latest safety watchlist.
Earlier this week, the TSB released its annual safety watchlist, which identifies the key safety issues that the board says should be addressed in the rail, air and marine sectors. This year's list includes crew fatigue, which TSB Chair Kathy Fox said in a press release has been a factor in numerous railroad investigations, "most notably regarding freight-train operations."

Norfolk Southern Corp.'s "Safety Train" rolled into Chattanooga, Tenn., last week to host 195 emergency responders for advanced training in how to handle hazardous materials.
The train serves as a mobile technical training center for the continuing education of first responders and government agency representatives. Staged last week on a track near the Chattanooga Fire Department, the train attracted emergency responders from 14 agencies in the Chattanooga and northwest Georgia areas, according to an NS press release.

CN has been named to the the Climate A List by CDP in recognition of the Class I's actions and strategies in response to climate change.CN was awarded a position on the list by the international not-for-profit organization that conducts independent assessments of corporations' climate change efforts. CDP takes into account actions to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change in the past reporting year, then produces data to reflect those efforts.CN is one of 193 companies that appear on this year's CDP A List."We are pleased to be recognized by the CDP for the eighth straight year and proud of CN's continued leadership on climate change action," said CN President and Chief Executive Officer Luc Jobin in a press release. "Operating efficiently has been the hallmark of CN's success and in the last decade we've reduced our rail locomotive carbon emission intensity by 19 percent and remain approximately 15 percent more fuel efficient than the industry average."CN provides its customers a carbon calculator that allows them to determine their emissions savings by switching freight from truck to rail, Jobin said, adding that trains are about four times more fuel efficient than trucks.The Climate A List was released in CDP's report, "Out of the Starting Blocks: Tracking Progress on Corporate Action."
