UP budgets $56.2 million for Nevada infrastructure work

Union Pacific Railroad has earmarked $56.2 million for infrastructure projects in Nevada this year.The Class I's plans for the state include $53 million to maintain railroad track and $3.2 million to maintain bridges, according to a UP press release.Key projects this year will include $12.3 million to replace more than 100,800 ties between North Las Vegas and the Utah border; $9 million to replace 19 miles of rail along the Nevada subdivision in Winnemucca; and $9 million to replace 20 miles of rail along the Elko subdivision between Winnemucca and Golconda.UP has invested more than $223.6 million on its Nevada infrastructure over the past five years.

In the latest of its state-by-state capital expenditure announcements, Union Pacific Railroad officials said this week the Class I will spend $59.3 million on track and bridge projects this year in Utah.UP's investments will include $54.1 million to maintain track and $123,000 to maintain bridges in the state, according to a UP press release.Key projects this year will include $13 million to replace 28 miles of rail along the Lakeside subdivision west of the Great Salt Lake; $11 million to replace more than 100,500 ties between Delta and Milford; and $10 million to replace 22 miles of rail along the Shaftner subdivision east of Wendover.Over the past five years, UP has spent more than $244.7 million to strengthen its infrastructure in Utah.

UP to serve Ocean Network at West Coast ports

Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. (ONE) and Ocean Network Express North America have selected Union Pacific Railroad to handle intermodal shipments arriving on container ships at West Coast Ports effective April 1.ONE, which has a global fleet of more than 250 vessels, was established by a merger of Japan's three largest ocean carriers: MOL, NYK and K Line.Under the agreement, containers arriving or departing from West Coast ports will transfer between ONE vessels and UP trains at its on-dock and near-dock facilities in Los Angeles and Long Beach, California. UP also will carry ONE shipments arriving at ports in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, UP officials said in a press release."Union Pacific is proud to continue our relationship with the carriers that make up ONE's joint venture and support its changing needs with transportation solutions offering efficient transit times and reliability," said Beth Whited, Union Pacific executive vice president and chief marketing officer. UP outlines $87 million capex plan for Louisiana

Union Pacific Railroad's capital expenditures program this year will include $87 million for track and bridge maintenance projects in Louisiana. The 2018 capex plan includes $48 million for track and $18 million for bridge maintenance in the state, UP announced Monday in a press release.Key projects will include $16 million to replace 149,977 railroad ties and install 56,869 tons of ballast on the line between Alexandria and Shreveport, and $12 million to replace 82,152 railroad ties and install 39,693 tons of ballast on the line between Luling and Livonia.Over the past five years, UP has spent more than $396 million on transportation infrastructure in Louisiana.

The Wyoming work will include $81.6 million to maintain track and $2.9 million to maintain bridges, according to a UP press release.Key projects planned this year include $12.9 million to replace more than 102,000 ties on the rail line that runs south of the Rock River to Cheyenne; $11.6 million to replace 25 miles of rail east of Wamsutter to just west of Rawlins; and $10.7 million to replace more than 79,000 ties on the line that runs west of Evanston to Granger.Over the past five years, UP has spent more than $251 million on its infrastructure in the state.

UP to spend $122 million on California infrastructure

Union Pacific Railroad's 2018 capital expenditures program will include $122.3 million for maintenance projects in California, the Class I announced yesterday.Among UP's investments in the state this year include $90.8 million to maintain track and $14.2 million to maintain bridges. Key projects will include:
• a $10.1 million project to replace 20 miles of rail between McFarland and Bakersfield;
• a $7.4 million investment in rail infrastructure in West Colton; and
• a $4.8 million project to replace more than 33,000 ties between Newark and Aromas.This year's planned capital expenditures in California are part of UP's ongoing investment strategy. Over the past five years, UP invested more than $985 million strengthening California's transportation infrastructure."Our targeted investments support customers and enhance our efficiency to deliver the goods American businesses and families use daily," said Wes Lujan, UP assistant vice president-public affairs, western region.

UP reports PTC status for Q4 2017

Union Pacific Railroad yesterday announced the status of its positive train control (PTC) implementation plan.

UP will meet all required deadlines for installing PTC on its network, and will continue to test and refine the system's "immature technologies" in 2019-2020, according to a company press release.

UP kicks off Brazos Yard construction

Union Pacific Railroad began construction this month on the Brazos Yard in Robertson County, Texas.

The $550 million rail yard project represents the largest capital investment in a single facility in the railroad's 155-year history, UP officials said in a press release.

UP boosts bottom line in 2017

Union Pacific Corp. today reported fourth-quarter 2017 adjusted net income rose 5 percent to $1.2 billion, or $1.53 per diluted share, compared with $1.14 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the same period a year ago.

Including the impact of the recently passed federal corporate tax reform, UP posted net income of $7.3 billion, or $9.25 per diluted share for Q4 2017, according to a UP press release.

Union Pacific Railroad Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Rob Knight has been named Best CFO for the fifth consecutive year by Institutional Investor magazine.Knight was named to the publication's 2018 All-America Executive Team list of transportation companies. He topped the Best CFO lists in the overall and buy-side categories, according to a UP press release.The magazine determines the rankings after an annual survey of the country's top analysts and portfolio managers. UP also received high marks in the Best Investor Relations Program and Analyst Days categories.Knight is responsible for all of UP's financial activities. He is a member of the Grupo Ferroviario Mexicano and TTX Co. boards of directors. He began his career with UP in 1980. Earlier positions at the company include vice president and general manager-energy, vice president and general manager-automotive and senior vice president-finance.Meanwhile, UP announced yesterday that it will increase the maximum track speed limit in Bigelow, Minnesota, starting next week.Train speeds at the Palm Avenue, 280th Street, 290th Street and 340th Street crossings will increase in weekly 5 mph increments from 40 mph starting Jan. 22 until reaching the 49 mph speed limit on Jan. 29.The increased speed limit follows a rail improvement project that strengthened infrastructure to allow for faster trains.UP announced last year that it planned to invest $14 million in Minnesota in 2017 to support the state's current and future freight transportation needs and to enhance safety and efficiency.

UP estimates $6 billion benefit in 2017 from new tax law

Union Pacific Railroad estimates that changes in the new tax law will provide a nearly $6 billion boost to the railroad's 2017 earnings.The Class I earlier this week disclosed the estimated impact from the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.The $5.8 billion benefit comes primarily from the revaluation of UP's deferred tax liabilities to reflect the new federal corporate tax rate of 21 percent.In addition, UP said the new law will result in a $200 million non-cash reduction to its operating expenses. UP may have more details on the new law's impact when it discloses its fourth-quarter 2017 financial results on Jan. 25.
