KCSM-served Kia plant opens in Mexico

Rail News Home Kansas City Southern 9/9/2016 Rail News: Kansas City Southern Kia Motors on Wednesday officially opened a new manufacturing plant in Mexico that will be served by Kansas City Southern de Mexico S.A. de C.V.Located in Pesqueria in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, the plant is Kia's sixth overseas production base and represents a $3 billion investment by Kia and suppliers, according to a Kia Motors press release.The plant will have an annual production capacity of 400,000 units, which will increase the company's global manufacturing capacity to 3.56 million vehicles. Production began in May, with the plant serving as the production base for the C-segment Kia Forte. Starting in 2017, the plant will produce the new fourth generation B-segment Rio.Kia officials anticipate the plant will be operating at full capacity by the end of 2018. CP calls for on-board recording technology legislation

Canadian Pacific officials are urging the Canadian government to act on legislation that would implement on-board locomotive video and voice recorders (LVVR).

The Class I has long been a supporter of the need to implement the recording devices in Canada. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), which earlier this week released the proceedings from its Safety Summit held this spring, has recommended that railroads install the devices to improve safety. The federal government has not passed legislation to require them, however.

CN, CDPQ reach Montreal track agreement for REM project

The Canadian infrastructure investment fund CDPQ Infra has entered into an agreement with CN to acquire the aerial structure leading to Central Station from CN in Montreal, the parties announced yesterday.

The agreement marks a major step in the development of the Reseau electrique metropolitain (REM) as a unified system with Central Station serving as the intermodal hub linking four metropolitan branches, CN and CDPQ Infra officials said in a press release.

RICA names UP 'railroad of the year'

Union Pacific Railroad has been named Railroad of the Year by the Railway Industrial Clearance Association (RICA).

The Class I received the honor primarily for its creation and implementation of PS Technology (PST) software called iClear, which enables users to quickly validate railroad routes for oversized loads without waiting for someone to manually check clearance, according to a UP press release.

CSX to add, speed up trains in Indiana

CSX will begin transporting more and longer trains at faster speeds between Seymour and Butlerville, Ind., as early as Sept. 7, the Class I announced Monday.

The changes are aimed at improving capacity and efficiency along the corridor, CSX officials said in a press release.

CN, Archer Daniels Midland log traffic increase at Decatur ramp

Collaborative logistics and marketing efforts by CN, Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) and the Midwest Inland Port (MIP) have helped increase container shipments over ADM's intermodal ramp in Decatur, Ill., the companies announced yesterday.

CN is transporting an increasing number of import containers from the Port of Montreal and the Port of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, to the Decatur facility. The Class I serves the facility three times weekly to deliver goods to Midwest customers, according to a press release issued by CN and ADM.

UP applies for permit to operate Texas cross-border bridge

Union Pacific Railroad has applied to the U.S. Department of State for a presidential permit that would allow the Class I to operate and maintain the Brownsville West Rail Bypass International Bridge on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The current permit to operate and maintain the bridge, which is located on the border west of Brownsville, Texas, is held by Cameron County, Texas, according to a document published today in the Federal Register.

Infiniti vehicles processed at CSX-served JAXPORT terminal

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) has moved the first shipment of new 2017 Infiniti QX30 premium active crossovers for distribution in the southeast United States through Jacksonville Port Authority's (JAXPORT) Blount Island Marine Terminal, which is served by CSX.

About 1,000 of the vehicles recently arrived at the port from the manufacturer's plant in Sunderland, England. The vehicles are being processed at WWL's on-terminal site at Blount Island before being shipped throughout the southeast, according to a JAXPORT press release.

CP ready to move this year's larger grain crop

Canadian Pacific is touting its preparation for moving this year's western Canadian grain crop, which is forecast to beat the five-year average.

The Class I is calling on supply chain partners to ensure grain is adequately moved and distributed. The rail supply chain has returned to normal since the extraordinary crop and winter 2013-14, and CP "has continued to move record amounts of grain," CP officials said in a press release.

Canadian Pacific fined $1.2 million for violating FCC rules

Canadian Pacific will pay a $1.2 million fine to resolve an investigation of the Class I's operation of more than 100 wireless radio facilities in the United States without the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) approval.

CP also failed to obtain FCC authorizations for the transfer of control of 30 wireless radio licenses, FCC officials said Monday in a press release.
