BNSF Railway Co. scored a 90% rating from the Human Rights Campaign on its 2022 "Best Places to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality" list, which recognizes leading U.S. corporations for their policies, practices and benefits pertaining to LGBTQ+ people."Diversity, equality and inclusion are at the core of BNSF’s vision and values," said BNSF Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Judy Carter in an emailed statement. "We are committed to a culture where every team member has an equal opportunity to achieve their full potential. It is an honor to be recognized by the Human Rights Campaign and to stand with our peers who share the belief that every employee deserves to be treated with dignity and respect."The index recognized 1,271 companies that promote LGTBQ+ friendly workplace policies. Other railroads that scored high on the index included Union Pacific Railroad, which achieved a perfect score, and Amtrak, which scored a 90% rating.

Union Pacific Railroad last week announced plans to assemble the world’s largest battery electric freight locomotive fleet.

UP will purchase 20 battery-electric locomotives from Progress Rail and Wabtec Corp. for testing in yard operations. The combined purchases and upgrades to yard infrastructure are expected to exceed $100 million, representing the largest investment in battery-electric technology by a U.S. railroad, UP officials said in a press release.

Norfolk Southern Railway has installed five new diesel-electric hybrid overhead gantry cranes at its Chicago Landers and Atlanta Inman intermodal terminals.

The 60-foot cranes are fuel efficient and further the Class I’s sustainability goals by reducing air emissions, NS officials said in a press release issued yesterday. The new cranes are in addition to the railroad's first five hybrid Konecranes introduced to Chicago operations in 2021 at the 47th Street intermodal facility.
