Rail supplier news from RCE, Alstom, Siemens and Cambridge Systematics (July 14)

Rail Construction Equipment Co. has rebranded itself as RCE Equipment Solutions Inc. The new name reflects the company's "growth and diversification goals," RCE officials said in a press release. Although the company has been primarily focused on rail maintenance equipment, RCE within recent years has received several requests for custom equipment design projects outside the rail market. RCE Equipment Solutions will serve as the umbrella company for three different divisions: RCE Rail, which continues to cater to the rail market; RCE Energy, which develops machinery for the energy sector; and RCE Engineering. Meanwhile, RCE's facility in Rockford, Illinois, is undergoing an "extensive" expansion, company officials said. To support the additional products, the company added 11,000 square feet of production space and 6,000 square feet of additional engineering and support space.

In Alstom's first fiscal quarter, the company booked $2.18 billion worth of orders compared to $1.03 billion for the same period in its last fiscal year. The quarter runs from April 1 through June 30. In addition, Alstom logged sales of $2.13 billion, up 6 percent. The company's orders this year include two contracts for almost 100 light-rail vehicles in Canada, a fleet modernization project in the United States and a metro system contract in Vietnam. By 2020, Alstom expects its sales to grow by about 5 percent each year.

USDOT's inspector general to review federal oversight of PTC funding

Rail News Home Positive Train Control 7/10/2017 Rail News: Positive Train Control
The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation has asked the U.S. Department of Transportation's Office of Inspector General (OIG) to review the oversight of federal positive train control (PTC) funding and recipients' use of the proceeds. The OIG has initiated a multi-part audit to address committee members' concerns about the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) and Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) PTC funding oversight. The audit's initial phase will focus on identifying railroads that received USDOT funding or financing to support their PTC projects, and describing those projects, OIG officials said in a statement issued July 5.The second phase will assess the FRA's and FTA's oversight of PTC funding allocations, and determine whether recipients have "completely and efficiently" used grant awards, they said.To date, the FRA and FTA have provided more than $915 million in grants to help support railroads' PTC implementation. However, according to FRA data through first-quarter 2017, only 27 percent of freight-rail route miles and 23 percent of passenger-rail route miles had fully operational PTC systems in place, OIG officials said.Freight and commuter railroads impacted by the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 must install their PTC systems by Dec. 31, 2018, or by two years after that date if they receive an allowable extension due to limited, justifiable circumstances.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has talked with Tesla and SpaceX Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk about the possibility of digging a tunnel for a high-speed rail line that would extend from downtown Chicago to O'Hare International Airport, according to Chicago news media.

Emanuel described the discussions as "preliminary," according to the Chicago Tribune. The mayor told the newspaper he will have Musk's team visit Chicago to see if digging a line makes more sense than other options such as using an existing railroad right of way or double-decking the Chicago Transit Authority's Blue Line to transport riders to the airport.

CP unveils sales and marketing initiatives

Rail News Home Canadian Pacific 6/7/2017 Rail News: Canadian Pacific
Canadian Pacific today announced new efforts by its sales and marketing team to improve the customer experience and generate growth opportunities.Building on the success of its grain franchise and Dedicated Train Program, CP's sales and marketing team is focused on strategic improvements across all lines of business, CP officials said in a press release."We have a proven operating model, the shortest routes in key markets, and are now making great strides in customer service," said President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel. "Over the last four years, a lot of work has been done to improve our cost structure and build a strong foundation for success. We are now well positioned to leverage CP's safe, highly efficient and low-cost transportation model." CP announced two recent initiatives that demonstrate its approach to enhancing the customer experience through offering a "more reliable total product" and extending its market reach:
• The Class I is ordering 41 new gensets equipped with the latest telematics and most fuel efficient technology available in the marketplace to be delivered throughout 2017 and first-quarter 2018. Gensets are purpose-built 40-foot containers that house two generators capable of powering up to 17 refrigerated ocean-going containers. With this investment, CP is expanding its protective and perishable service product to serve a growing segment of the transportation market.
• A new "live" lift at Portal, N.D., was opened in May. Portal is the border crossing for CP's intermodal traffic moving between western Canada and the U.S. Midwest. The new service allows CP to lift single containers off of trains for inspection by Canadian and U.S. authorities as opposed to having entire intermodal cars set-off, which could hold three or more containers. The investment will eliminate non-targeted containers from being delayed at the border crossing, CP officials said."We are now at an inflection point and are well positioned to grow the franchise, sell a competitive service and offer our customers a best-in-class, total transportation solution," said CP Chief Marketing Officer John Brooks. "CP delivers safely and efficiently from A to Z, but now by collaborating closely with our customers and actively listening, we better understand their needs and are taking action to strengthen our total product in the marketplace."
