Begeman named permanent STB chairman

 

First nominated to the STB by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate in 2011, Begeman, 53, is serving her second and final term, which expires Dec. 31, 2020 but which allows for a 12-month holdover pending Senate confirmation of a successor. STB members are limited to two five-year terms by statute.

FRA holding PTC meetings with railroads, suppliers

Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) leadership is stepping up its role in the journey toward positive train control (PTC) implementation by meeting with railroad and supply representatives to ensure progress is being made.

FRA hosted face-to-face meetings earlier this year with each of the 41 railroads subject to the PTC mandate. FRA explains that the purpose of the meetings was to evaluate each railroad's PTC status and learn what remaining steps each needs to take to have a PTC system fully implemented by the December 2018 deadline or, at a minimum, to meet the statutory criteria necessary to qualify for an alternative schedule.

The company's planned investment in the state includes $48 million to maintain track and $18 million to maintain bridges. Key projects to progress this year in Louisiana include a $16 million investment in the rail line between Alexandria and Shreveport to replace 149,977 crossties and install 56,869 tons of ballast, as well as a $12 million investment in the rail line between Luling and Livonia to replace 82,152 crossties and install 39,693 tons of ballast.

TransLink Mayors’ Council, British Columbia agree on regional funding transit expansion

The TransLink Mayors' Council and the government of British Columbia have agreed on a plan to fund the CA$2.5 billion (US$1.91 billion) regional share of the Phase Two Plan for infrastructure.

TransLink describes the 10-year Phase Two Plan as a historic investment in the region's transit and transportation system and, once implemented, will help meet current and future demand. TransLink reported a six-percent increase in transit ridership in 2017 and expects the demand to increase as the region is expected to add more than 1 million people in the next 30 years.
