The Class I's 2018 capital expenditures program includes $40.8 million to maintain track and $23.5 million to maintain bridges in the state, according to a UP press release.
Key projects planned this year include $10.7 million to replace 49 miles of rail between Watseka and Chicago Heights, and $9.8 million to replace more than 51,000 ties between Elburn and Beaver Island.
Over the past five years, UP has invested more than $497.3 million on infrastructure projects in Illinois.
UP plans to spend $3.3 billion across its network this year, following investments totaling $34 billion from 2008 to 2017.
